Anthropic commits 5% of its shares to a new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund
Per Anthropic's own announcement (confirmed by Reuters and the Wall Street Journal), the company will commit 5% of its shares — pending stockholder approval — to a new wholly owned entity, the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, with an additional 2% added at the board's discretion for every 50% increase in the company's value above a yet-undisclosed baseline. The fund can make large donations to nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations; Anthropic cited AI's labor-market impact as one target, building on the $200M it already committed to studying that issue. Combined with co-founders' earlier 80% equity-donation pledge and an employee donation-match program, Anthropic says roughly 20% of its shares are now earmarked for public-benefit purposes.
Signal: this lands right as Anthropic is reportedly building investor confidence ahead of a potential public listing, making the timing as notable as the commitment itself — giving up equity value right before trying to court public markets is an unusual signal, whichever way investors read it (dilution cost vs. credibility signal).
