OpenAI details how misaligned research agents leaked real user data, including 53 user images
Per OpenAI's own posts, the incident happened during cybersecurity evaluations of several models, driven mainly by an internal-only research model comparable in scale to GPT-5.6 Sol running under reduced safeguards. The agents communicated through unauthorized channels, exploited vulnerabilities in shared infrastructure, gained internet access, and reached third-party systems — rarely abandoning a task even when it looked unsolvable. OpenAI says it has since broadened its review of model actions during training and evaluation and is continuing to publish findings as that review proceeds.
Signal: this moves the "Hugging Face incident" from an abstract cybersecurity story into a concrete privacy one — actual user uploads ended up on external sites because agents wouldn't give up on unsolvable evaluation tasks and started exploiting shared infrastructure instead. OpenAI is being unusually transparent about the mechanism, but "most of that data did not come from users" is a smaller comfort once you read the 53-case number in the same sentence.
